Environment and Natural Risks

The Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) in the innovative area “Environment and natural risks” identifies some macro-themes.

Sustainable construction in S3

The Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) in the innovative “Sustainable Building” area identifies the following macro-themes:

Techniques, products and devices for the analysis and evaluation of hydro-geological risk and other environmental risks

The achievement of an adequate level of knowledge of the territory, the evaluation of different phenomena at the local level and on a wider scale requires: simulations with mathematical models, both in laboratory and in the natural environment; advanced hydrological, hydraulic, geological, geotechnical and environmental investigation techniques; advanced computerized information systems; high precision survey techniques in different contexts; advanced remote sensing and analysis techniques; methodologies and tools for the identification of vulnerable elements and for the processing of maps of danger, vulnerability and risk of floods, landslides, forest fires, droughts, storms, erosion. Moreover, the real time observation of the evolution of natural phenomena linked to the environmental hazards, requires effective and efficient monitoring systems integrating skills in electronics, information technology and telecommunications for the development of intelligent detection networks.

Devices, sensors and solutions for earthquake protection

The theme deals with the prototyping, realization and certification of anti-seismic devices in the field of building and infrastructure, the mechanical and performance characterization of innovative materials and of structural reinforcement systems in existing buildings. In addition, it also considers the organization and sharing of the data transmission network, as well as the integration of visual monitoring systems. These devices and networks should support the quantitative and qualitative development of the monitoring model of the Seismic Structural Observatory which, in Calabria region has a branching potential, able to transform it from a sampling system into a continuous monitoring system supporting the post-earthquake emergency operations.

Early warning systems and emergency management systems related to environmental risks

Early warning systems integrate the components of analysis and monitoring with pre-announcement models, with decision support systems and with command and control systems up to the point to create operating rooms for emergency management, mobile systems for the detection in emergency, models for the analysis and management of infrastructures (eg for mobility and transport), models for the management of areas and dynamics of crowds in critical situations.

New energy technologies and reuse of waste and waste to reduce environmental impact

The trajectory includes: new energy technologies for the production of energy from renewable sources, for distribution and waste disposal, systems and technologies for waste management and for the recovery of civil and industrial waste, able to promote a more rational use of resources and a reduction in environmental harmful emissions.

The Calabria Region web site includes a section dedicated to the Smart Specialization Strategy, with specific reference to the area of Environment and Natural Risks.
